The Tinderbox is a short story about a soldier coming back
from war who is greeted and given a very generous offer by an old witch, all she wants in return for his help is for him to return her grandmothers' tinderbox. After
taken her up on her offer which results in the soldier becoming extremely
wealthy, decides to be greedy and keep the tinderbox that the witch wanted him
to bring back for himself and cuts off the witch’s head. After a period a
jollities with wealth, he finds that he has been used and ran out of money, and
upon using the tinderbox he kept from the witch, finds that the tinderbox can
summon the guardians of the cache where he gained his wealth. He began to use
the guardians to fund his wealth for a while until he finds out about a
beautiful princess whose parents keep her locked away for fear of a prophecy
that she would marry a simple soldier. He uses the guardians to bring him the
princess in secret where he can’t help but kiss her while she sleeps. The
princess tells her parents of a dream where this happened and they made plans
to see if it really was happening. The guardians outwitted the first woman set
to watch out for strange activity, but afterwards, the Queen made her own plan.
By attaching a small bag of corn flour to the princess’s neck they were able to
follow the trail to the soldiers’ house. The soldier was then arrested and
taken to jail, where he no longer possessed the tinderbox, however he paid a
shoemaker’s boy to go to his house and fetch the tinderbox. On the gallows, the
soldier made a last request to smoke one last time before being hung, which was
granted. Subsequently he summoned all three guardians who he ordered to not let
him be hung. The guardians went to town on everyone, including the King and
Queen. The people, in fear, decided that the soldier should marry the Princess and
become King.
