After watching and taking notes on the Photoshop hair tutorial video I posted, I have had a crack at it myself. Sadly because I am using CS2, I have to use the smudge tool as I have no mixer brush, but I think it turned out alright.

The challenge will be trying to apply this technique to a portrait and to create a realistic looking hairline, and instead of a 10-15 minute sketch job, it might take an hour or two for the detail on a full head of hair. However, before i go and slap some hair on the head I made, I need to come up with some ideas for hairstyles.
